Yayasan Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng, a charitable foundation fully funded by IOI Group of Companies, awarded scholarships and academic grants worth RM1.3mil to 25 outstanding students in recognition of their excellent academic and extra-curricular achievements.
The Yayasan TSLSC Scholarship presentation ceremony for 2012/ 2013 was held at Palm Garden Hotel, IOI Resort City in Putrajaya recently.
The value of scholarships marked the highest scholarship contribution awarded by Yayasan TSLSC since the introduction of the scholarship awards in 1998.
The scholarships are offered to promising students to pursue their degree courses in selected disciplines at recognised local institutions of higher learning, which are in line with Yayasan TSLSC’s objective to contribute towards the betterment of society, environment and community welfare.
IOI Group executive director Datuk Lee Yeow Chor, who was the guest of honour, congratulated the deserving students on their achievements and advised them not to neglect their extra-curricular activities.
He cited factors such as leadership, interpersonal skills and ability to get along with fellow students as important to their advancement in life.
More importantly, he regarded the desire to keep experimenting with the unknown as essential to determine their field of talent so that they would be able to excel as IOI Group’s employees of choice upon their graduation.
A mock cheque for RM1,334,960 was presented by Lee to Yayasan TSLSC executive director Datin Joanne Wong who also presented the scholarships to the students at the presentation ceremony.
IOI Group’s corporate video was shown to give the scholarship recipients a better understanding of IOI Group’s diverse business divisions.
This was followed by an informative presentation of IOI Group’s resource-based division covering the palm oil milling, process stages in the refinery, kernel crushing, oleochemicals, and specialty oils and fats by IOI Group senior general manager (group engineering) Wong Chee Kuan.
IOI Group human resource manager Low Kia Wei also shared with the recipients the career path that is viable within the company’s plantation division.
Meanwhile, Edmund Lau Jin Jie from Universiti Teknologi Petro-nas, on behalf of the 2012/2013 batch of scholarship recipients, thanked the Yayasan TSLSC and IOI Group for the educational assistance.
The Chemical Engineering student summed up their joy by expressing gratitude to their parents and vowing to do their best to graduate with top honours.
The rest of the scholars shared Lau’s delight as they received their hard-earned awards on stage.
The ceremony ended on a high note with recipients and their parents adjourning for high-tea at Palm Garden Hotel.
