Federation: Lawn bowl tourney can boost tourism

THE Malaysian Lawn Bowls Federation president Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid has called on the Perlis Lawn Bowls Association to organise an international tournament to help promote tourism in the state.

He said the general standard of the game in the country had improved over the past few years and Malaysian players had won international tournaments.

“Lawn bowling in Malaysia is becoming increasingly popular among Malaysians, and the standard of the game has improved and produced world beaters,” he said.

He added: “Perlis too have produced some notable players like Auni Fathiah Kamis, who is currently the women’s national third ranked player.

“Others who have made a name for themselves at national meets are Syafiq Afif Abdul Rahman, Mohd Faiz Najmi, Daeng Dhadiry and Syafiqa Haidar Abdul Rahman.”

Ahmad Sarji said lawn bowling had become an instrument for some states to promote tourism.

“Kedah have the Mahsuri Cup, and Perak the Taming Sari Cup tournaments open to international players. Likewise, Sabah have the Kinabalu Cup, Sarawak the Tan Sri P. Ramlee Cup and Malacca the Hang Tuah Cup.

“In all these tournaments, foreign players are invited to participate with the additional lure of exotic tourist spots to boot,” he said.

He said Perlis could come up with a challenge cup named after an icon or a historical place to set the ball rolling.

Ahmad Sarji said the next Sukma Games would be held in Kangar, and it would be a good time to introduce an international tournament as a curtain raiser.

“I will urge the state association to compile a catalogue of tourist spots in the state to sell to overseas participants while baiting them with the lawn bowling tournament.

“It will be an excellent form of tourist promotion,” he added.

He also announced that 10 players (five men and five women) had been selected to represent the country at the World Bowls 2012 in Adelaide, Australia, from Nov 24.

They will participate in five events.

The players selected are:

Men: Mohd Hizlee Abdul Rais, Mohd Azwan Shuhaimi, Mohd Fairuz Abdul Jabar, Khairul Anuar Abdul Kadir, Ahmad Saufi Rosli.

Women: Emma Firyana Saroji, Azlina Arshad, Zuraini Khalid, Auni Fathiah Kamis, Nor Zafira Md Noor.

Manager: Capt (R) Ahmad Shah Khazi.
