Keeping watch on accident hot spots


JOHOR BARU: The state Road Transport Department (RTD) would monitor 12 accident-prone hot spots here during Hari Raya.

Its director Johari Yusof had assured the public that RTD officers would be patrolling Federal roads round the clock and would not cause any traffic congestion to road users.

“The ops will begin from now until August 26 with the help of 185 personnel to curb road offences including speeding, beating red lights and reckless driving.”

Johari added that the hotspots are: KM20 Jalan Johor Baru-Air Hitam, KM21 Jalan Johor Baru-Pontian, KM20 Pasir Gudang Highway-Perling, KM21 Jalan Muar-Pagoh and KM140 Jalan Johor Baharu-Melaka.

“Other spots where accidents frequently occur are KM10 Jalan Kesang-Muar, KM15 Jalan Segamat-Kuantan, KM18 Simpang Lima Parit Sulong, KM10 Jalan Kluang-Air Hitam-Batu Pahat, KM49 Jalan Johor Baru-Air Hitam, KM71 Jalan Johor Baru-Mersing and KM2 Jalan Johor Baru-Kota Tinggi.”

The RTD, added Johari, would also be keeping watch on heavy vehicles and express buses by performing technical checks on the vehicles and urine tests of the drivers at bus terminals.

Special motorcycle ops would also be carried out throughout the period on main roads in view of 60% of fatal road accidents last year had involved motorcyclists.
