KUCHING: The 994 emergency number used by the Fire and Rescue Services Department will not be used from April 1 onwards.
This is in line with the Government’s aim of using 999 as a single emergency number, the department’s state director Nor Hisham Mohammad said.
”This means people only need to call 999 to obtain emergency assistance and humanitarian services from the police, Fire and Rescue Services Department, hospitals and Civil Defence Department,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He added that the streamlining of the number under the Malaysia Emergency Response System (MERS) 999 would make the handling of emergency calls more efficient and effective.
As such, he reminded that from April 1 the public must not call 994 anymore in cases of emergency.
“Just call 999,” he reiterated.
He also advised the public to keep handy the telephone numbers of fire stations near their place of residence in order to be able to contact them immediately during an emer-gency.
