Sunshine in Times Square

PENANG Times Square in George Town now has an anchor tenant – Sunshine City, the seventh outlet of Penang-based departmental stores-cum-supermarket operator Suiwah Corporation Bhd.

Occupying a total of 110,000sq ft of retail space, the outlet housed on Levels 3 and 4, would be accessible near the escalator to the carpark, as well as from outside via a scenic escalator and bubble lift - both specially built for Sunshine City.

“Level 3 has 30,000sq ft of lifestyle fashion. One of the specialities in ladies’ fashion is Equator, where we provide a platform for Penang designers to showcase their creations.

“This gives shoppers the option of purchasing an exclusive but affordable outfit instead of ones that are mass produced,” said Sunshine Wholesale Mart Sdn Bhd advertising and promotion manager Peter Chan.

Equator now featured the creations of nine designers who are students and former students of the Equator Academy of Art. At the opening of the store on Saturday, Equator had 34 one-off garments on display.

Sunshine Wholesale Mart general manager Yee Kam Ming said this was the company’s only outlet in George Town, and assured that its prices would be fair and reasonable despite the location at Penang Times Square.

Making a rare public appearance at the opening ceremony on Saturday were former Penang chief minister Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu and his wife Toh Puan Goh Sing Yeng.

Dr Lim, who turned 90 in May, is Suiwah Corporation group chairman.

In January, Dr Lim had also opened the Sunshine Farlim Shopping Mall in Bandar Baru Air Itam. In June, he launched the Penang Skills Development Centre’s 20th anniversary commemorative book, a 160-page hardcover titled “Developing Human Capital — PSDC: The First 20 Years” at the centre in Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah.

Besides Sunshine City, Suiwah Corporation now owns and manages Sunshine Square, Sunshine Farlim Shopping Mall, Sunshine Farlim Wholesale Centre, Sunshine Jelutong, Sunshine Lip Sin and Suiwah Air Itam on the island.
