BUKIT Bintang Boys Secondary School (BBBSS) students will celebrate their 50th anniversary with a dinner on Saturday at the Tropicana Golf and Country Resort.
One of the guests of honour will be their former headmaster Dr Alastair L. McGregor, who is known for caning the students to enforce discipline.
He is known for his famous quote “fetch the cane and touch your toes” when they were called to his office back in the sixties.
A former student and also one of the organising committee members of the 50th golden anniversary, R. Arunachalam, said McGregor played a key role in influencing students and prefects to become good citizens in their adulthood.
“McGregor was known for his liberal use of the cane to discipline students. The discipline at the school was very good.
“He believed service leads to success. One of his motto was love all, serve all,” he said, adding that the school song was written by McGregor.
Arunachalam said some described the headmaster as a fantastic man.
Students respected the rules and regulations and parents never argued with his decision to mete out punishment.
“McGregor’s main objective was disciplining students and making them realise the importance of education,” he said.
He said BBBSS Old Boys Association has worked hand-in-hand with the Parent-Teacher Association and the board of governors of the school to organise the event.
“The organising committee anticipates good response from the old boys, ex-teachers and PTA members,” he said.
