Malaysian entrepreneurs produce their first Tamil movie in India

MALAYSIAN entrepreneurs Datuk R. Doraisingam and K. Karunamurthy joined forces to produce their first Tamil movie in India.

The movie, Muniyandi: Third Year Zoology, is currently showing to full houses at local cinemas and in London, Dubai, Chennai, Singapore and Canada.

This is the first time the Lotus group is fully financing the production of an Indian movie. Previously, they had partly financed other Indian movies.

Perlis Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Isa Sabu attended the movie premier last week and he also launched six new Lotus cinemas at the Brem Mall in Kepong.

Doraisingam said he was going global to expand his movie operations in other countries.

“We believe there is a growing movie-going audience wanting new themes and exciting movies.

“As a movie producer and distributor, we want to be part of creating the fun for moviegoers,” he said.

He managed to get one of South India’s famous directors Thirumurugan, who is also the director of India’s top soap opera Metti Oli, who will make moviegoers stay in their seat throughout the film.

Another big name is Indian comedian Vadivelu who takes a turn as the local witch-doctor, complete with bells and saffron cloth regalia.

Newcomer Chinna Thalapathi Bharath plays the hero, Muniyandi, a third year college student studying zoology.

The comedy and plot becomes more colourful when demure 17-year-old, Poorna falls in love with Bharath.

Poorna has been hailed as the new Asin by no less than actor Vijay.

In the movie, everything goes topsy-turvy when Poorna’s marriage is arranged, she turns around and says that she was never in love with Muniyandi in the first place.

Furious, the hero thrashes her with his slippers and sets fire to her father’s coconut estate.

“We mush give credit to Thirumurugan’s screenplay.

“He dedicated several months to writing and planning the plot,” Doraisingam said.

Last month, Vijay released the first copy of the audio in Chennai and he was confident that the movie would go on to become a hit wherever it was screened.
