Honouring top SMEs

SUCCESSFUL small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the northern region can look forward to be in the running to win the Golden Bull Award 2008.

Jointly presented by Nanyang Siang Pau Sdn Bhd and Expomal International, in association with Celcom (Malaysia) Bhd, the annual awards are back again for the sixth year to honour 100 top performing SMEs and their achievements in line with the Government's efforts to promote and strengthen their development in the country.

Based on the organising committee’s re-cords, 80 SMEs in the region had been honou-red since the awards were first handed out in 2003.

Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce vice-president Datuk Ooi Gan @ Loh Gan, who attended the Golden Bull Award 2008 Road-show in Penang on Wednesday, said he hoped the state government would create a business environment and introduce policies and regulations that encouraged growth of SMEs.

“SMEs play important roles in supporting and complementing large corporations with their products and services. They contribute 47.3% to the country’s GDP.

“Although SMEs are also affected by the rising global prices of oil and goods, they must accept it as a challenge and try to turn it into an advantage to grow their businesses further,” he said.

Themed ‘Leading by Excellence’, this year’s awards will honour outstanding SMEs with turnovers between RM5mil to RM75mil over the last three years, and up-and-coming SMEs with turnovers below RM5mil over the last three years.

SMEs are encouraged to send in their nominations by July 31. Nomination forms can be obtained from Nanyang Siang Pau branches nationwide and Expomal International office, or downloaded at www.goldenbullaward.com.
