Lawyer launches book in view of current trend

FOR Thavalingam Thavarajah, being honorarysecretary of the Malaysian EmployersFederation (MEF) means more thanjust sieving through loads of paperwork.

The lawyer has often endeavoured to go the extra mile in an effort to educate both employers and employees on their rights and aspects of the law.

Thavalingam has proven to be far from an armchair critic, with his latest legal publication entitled Constructive Dismissal: Commentaries and Cases.

The book was launched by Tengku Sri Bendahara di-Raja Terengganu Tengku Mustaffa Kamel ibni Almarhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, at the Top Hat Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Also present was MEF president Datuk Azman Shah. Thavalingam said constructive dismissal occurred when an employee considered himself dismissed from his employment because of a fundamental violation of his rights by the employer.

He said the publication was essential at this juncture due to the statistically proven rise in constructive dismissal cases.

Azman, in his speech, said for human capital to mature and be better developed, knowledge was the key factor.

“Knowledge can be derived from many sources. Legal publications can, in my view, only provide good knowledge,” he added.
