An exhibition with a Malaysian flavour

THE works of 34 artists fromdifferent generations andgenre are currently on displayat the “Aspects of MalaysianArt'' exhibition in the RA Fine Artsgallery, Kuala Lumpur.

The exhibition features artworks by Ab Aziz Tasrif, Alfarizan Supiee, Amir Zainorin, Arham Azmi, Azhar Mohd Jaafar, Chan Ka Wai, Choong Kam Kow, Emelia Tan, Fathullah Luqman Yusuf, Fatimah Chik, Harozila Ramli, Haslin Ismail, Ilham Fadhli Shaimy, Ismail Kadir, Jalaluddin Ramli, Khalil Ibrahim, Maamor Jantan, Mad Anuar Ismail, Maslim Md Ramly, Mohd Fairuz Paisam, Musrizal Mat Isa, Kartika Affandi, Padil Osman, Patrick Lasak, Rahmat Haron, Sani Md Dom, Samsudin Mohamad, Shahrul Niza Zaini, Shukor Yahya, Syed Ahmad Jamal, Thangarajoo, Zaim Durulman, Zakaria Ali and Zaslan Zeeha Zaini.

RA Fine Arts director Raja Ahmad Aminullah said that this was the seventh exhibition since the gallery opened six months ago.

“At the exhibition, visitors can see works of mostly young artists. They have used mixed art forms and style like glass, watercolour, oil on canvas, sculptures and acrylic.

“The artworks are more urban but very close to the theme. It shows parts of Malaysian experience as undergone by the artists themselves.

Colourful: This political contemporary piece titled Chair was done using mixed media on canvas by Zaslan ZeehaZaini.

“You would be able to feel the presence of youth projected through the exhibition,'' said Raja Ahmad.

Patrick Lasak, a familiar name in the art world talked about his Naga painting, which caught the attention of many people at the exhibition.

“Dragon or the naga exists in almost every culture. It should not be feared but embraced because it is faced with extinction.

“The colours I have used in the painting are very soft and feminine. The motive is abstract because as we go through different eras, we encounter different versions of the dragon.

“This is my version and my gift to the people of one of the beauties of the world, “ said Lasak.

He said that time was never an aspect while painting but that an artist must feel deeply about the piece he is working on.

Maslin Md Ramly, another young emerging glass artist hopes to follow in the footstep of prominent glass artist Raja Azhar Idris.

“There are not many young artists interested in this area. I am pursuing glass at the moment and I have used batik as the motif.

“I wanted to feature something different yet reflective of Malaysia. As a young artist, it is up to us to preserve our cultural heritage and present it to the world, “ said Maslin.

She said that it took her less than one week to come up with a piece.
