ENERGY efficiency campaigners are going around Penang to champion energy saving.
The My Energy Smart Home Campaign 2008, run by third-year Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Persuasive Communications students, aims to increase the public’s knowledge on good energy efficiency practices.
Launched officially at Queensbay Mall recently, the campaign zeroed in on households.
Campaign project director Ng Wai Sin said household members were targeted because they were important contributors to the nation’s economic and human resource development.
“They need to learn how to use energy efficiently at home and at the workplace.
“It is important as it allows us to pay less for energy without affecting our comfort and quality of life,” she said in her welcoming address.
The event featured a roadshow with exhibitions and demonstrations on energy efficiency practices and products by Penang Development Centre (PDC), Osram (M) Sdn Bhd, Centre of Education and Training in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CETREE), Pensonic, Solartech Sales and Servi-ces Sdn Bhd and USM.
The roadshow’s director Evelyn Teoh said the main aim was to educate shoppers to learn about smart energy use and renewable energy.
“We are distributing balloons to children to draw parents’ attention and get them to visit the sponsors’ booths to read brochures and answer questionnaires.”
Among the main attractions of the event was a Perodua Myvi that many shoppers mistook as the grand lucky draw prize.
“The car is part of our Myvi Energy Smart Squad programme to educate the public on petrol efficiency. It is for demonstration only,” explained Teoh.
My Energy Smart Home Campaign 2008 will be held until March 9.
The Myvi Energy Smart Squad will visit Midlands One-Stop Centre and Island Plaza on Jan 19; Carrefour Seberang Jaya, BM Plaza, Giant Prai and Megamall Penang on Jan 26; and Giant Bayan Baru and Prangin Mall on Jan 27.
The PDC Community Outreach Programmes will be at Pangsapuri Golf View, Bukit Jambul, on Jan 20 and Halaman Prima, Halaman Areka and Halaman Teratai, Bukit Jambul, on Jan 27.
