KLANG Valley-based badminton club KLRC have not only provided a new lease of life for former national shuttlers to have another crack at international level, they are venturing into badminton-related initiatives beyond the Malaysian shores in their aim to lift the profile of the game. MetroSport spoke to several of their foreign associates to find out the reasons they are linked to the club.
”The club has provided good sparring for our (England’s) number one men’s singles player, Andrew Smith, over the past five years. On average, he spends about three months a year training with the club. He has picked up the Asian dimension to the game from the good coaches with strong credentials in the set-up, such as Indra Gunawan and Ong Ewe Hock. I have been involved in the game for more than 30 years and I am amazed with the KLRC owner’s (Datuk Seri Andrew Kam) hands-on approach to develop badminton. His unconditional gesture in showing a personal interest in helping the players has always been a very significant act.”
