From a stall to a restaurant

Seberang Prai residents are never short of choices when it comes to Western food. 

However, one restaurant that stands out is Richard’s Top Taste Cafe in Taman Inderawasih, Prai, managed by Richard Sim and sons Billy, Jimmy and Raymond.  

Many people will remember Richard way back in 1990 when he first started his business at a stall by the beach offering the only Western food in Butterworth then.  

He is known not only for his good food but also the tall white hat perched on his head as he whips up his Western interpretations.  

The stall has since evolved into the restaurant that has been in business for a decade now.

The halal outlet offers a relaxed and comfortable setting with mini-malist decor.  

Food wise, the menu comprises over 60 main dishes including sig-nature creations of sizzling chicken with seafood, Royal Steak (tender-loin fillet served with mashed potato and baked corn salad), English Cordon Bleu and Italian chicken (special fried chicken with Sim’s own recipe).  

The sizzling chicken is certainly a noteworthy dish with the grilled chicken in brown sauce, New Zea-land mussel, fresh prawns, baked vegetables and corn served on a hot plate.  

Another popular dish is the English Cordon Bleu using the chef’s own secret recipe.  

The fish fillet is wrapped with cheese, chicken ham, mushrooms and prawns and coated with golden crumbs for that lip-smacking taste.  

An interesting new creation is stuffed chicken – chicken stuffed with baby corn, button mushrooms, green capsicum stirfried with Italian herbs, tomato puree and a tad of curry powder. 

The chicken is intense in flavours making every bite a sheer delight.  

Another dish to tempt the palate is salmon en papillote. The salmon is amply complemented by a light sauce of lemon, tomato and basil butter. Do squeeze the lemon slice over it for that extra zing.  

For those with an appetite for local and Oriental cuisine, there are fried beef hor fun, P. Ramlee’s kampung fried rice, sweet and sour fish or chicken with rice, ginger and spring onion chicken or beef with rice, tomyam seafood spaghetti and sizzling seafood noodle to name a few.  

Vegetarian fare consists of sizzling noodles, stir-fried mixed vegetables with rice, vegetable hor fun, vege-table lam phooi (hor fun gravy with rice) and vegetable fried rice.  

The drink selection is extensive with juices, soft drinks, coffees and milk shakes. And not forgetting the ice cream creations to round up a lovely meal.
