Meet to identify potential athletes

AS part of its efforts to encourage potential athletes to participate in more events, the Federal Territory Amateur Athletics Association (FTAAA) will be organising the Throws, Jumps and Under Distance Championship at SMK Seri Permaisuri in Cheras on Feb 1.

The championship is part of the Sukan Teras Development Programme and organised jointly with the Kuala Lumpur Schools Sports Council (MSSKL) and is specially designed for athletes who are 13 years and above.

FTAAA secretary S. Vegiyathuman said the championship was to identify potential athletes for development programmes.

“Promising athletes will be drafted into the KL junior squad. They will undergo training and take part in local meets,'' said Vegiyathuman.

The events in the meet are 60m, 150m, 300m, 600m, 1,200m, 7,000m, 5,000m walk, 3,000m steeplechase, long jump, triple jump, high jump, javelin, discus, shot putt and hammer for boys while the events for girls are 60m, 150m, 300m, 600m, 1,200m, 3,000m, 5,000m walk, 2,000m steeplechase, long jump, triple jump, high jump, javelin, discus, shot putt and hammer.

Vegiyathuman said they were charging a nominal fee of RM2 per event for an athlete from an affiliate, RM3 per event for non affiliates while for school children from Kuala Lumpur it is RM1 per event and for those from outside KL, the fee is RM2 per event.

“We are expecting a good turnout and we believe that tournaments like this will contribute towards the overall development of athletics in our country.

“In fact we have received quite a number of entries and many are calling for more information,’’ added Vegiyathuman.

The entry forms are available at the FTAAA office at Wisma OCM. For more information, contact 03-2715 2843.
