PENANG: Two drug traffickers were among 279 people rounded up during an anti-drug operation on the island and mainland over the past three days.
State deputy police chief SAC (II) Othman Harun said the first suspect in his 20s was nabbed with about 100gm of heroin in George Town on Saturday.
The second suspect arrested was being held under the Special Preventive Laws.
“Most of those rounded up during Ops Tapis since Friday were drug addicts. They will be sent to drug rehabilitation centres after being charged,” he said yesterday.
SAC Othman said the week-long operation was targeted at drug haunts especially those in George Town, adding that investigations had shown that addicts were involved in snatch thefts and robberies.
“We also checked a nightclub on the mainland on Sunday where two men were tested positive for drugs.”
In Prai, a housewife lost a gold chain to a snatch thief while she was hanging clothes outside her Kampung Manis home at about noon yesterday.
Police said the man got down from a motorcycle ridden by an accomplice and grabbed the woman’s gold chain with the accomplice pretended to ask for directions.
The 64-year-old woman screamed for help and neighbours rushed out and detained the man. His accomplice however managed to flee on his motorcycle.
The suspect was handed over to police who arrived at the scene shortly.
District OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Anil Shah Abdullah said initial investigations, the suspect detained was wanted for 10 snatch theft cases.
