KUANTAN: Visitors to the former mining town in Sungai Lembing near here will be able to dine in a more comfortable setting with the construction of a new hawker centre.
The RM550,000 hawker centre, located in the town centre, will replace the wooden one which had been demolished.
Construction on the new centre is on-going and it is expected to be completed in July next year.
Funds for the centre was allocated by the Housing and Local Government Ministry.

State Local Government and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Hoh Khai Mun said the former hawker centre was 50 years old when it was demolished.
Hoh said the 16 stalls operating in the centre had stopped business but would be allowed to temporarily operate at several approved areas pending the new centre’s completion.
“People can enjoy the famous Lembing Tau Foo noodles in a better environment when the new centre is up.
“We hope it will attract more visitors to this former mining town and spur economic activities,” he said during a visit to the project site recently.
Also present were Sungai Lembing assemblyman Md Sohaimi Mohd Shah, Semambu assemblyman Pang Tsu Ming and Sungai Lembing MCA branch chairman Ng Fock Heng, who is also the Paya Besar MCA division chairman.
“As for rental, the local council will fix the rate later but it will be reasonable,” he said, adding that the hawkers had informed him that business was good only during weekends and public holidays.
“If the hawkers have any problems, they are welcome to meet us and we will try to resolve the issues,” he said.
