THE Public Works Department has failed to show a satisfactory level of commitment in fulfilling its slogan and client charter.
Taking JKR to task, Penang Public Works, Utilities and Transportation Committee chairman Datuk Koay Kar Huah said JKR should take the matter seriously.
“Slogans and charters should not be mere gimmicks. They must be translated into action to reflect our roles and responsibilities,” he said.
Koay said JKR must focus on enhancing knowledge to improve the quality of its de-livery system.
“Being such as big agency, JKR can be a catalyst to development now that the Ninth Malaysia Plan projects have been announced,” he said.
He was speaking at the national-level Quality and Innovation Award presentation ceremony at Gurney Hotel in Penang on Monday. He represented Chief Minister Tan Sr Dr Koh Tsu Koon.
JKR Taiping received the Quality Award while JKR headquarters received the Innovation Award.
JKR director-general Prof Datuk Dr Wahid Omar said quality management must be practised daily to complement efforts to improve the delivery system.
“All the state JKRs and branches have set up quality committees to promote knowledge and competency.
“We are also more customer-focused and set on improving quality,” he said, adding that Pahang would host the Quality and Innova-tion award presentation ceremony next year.
Penang JKR director Abdu-llah Abdul Rahman said completing the Ninth Malaysia Plan projects on time was the challenge that confronted JKR now.
