NOR Shaheera Abdul Khalid excels not only in rhythmic gymnastics but also in her studies.
The 11-year -old Nor Shaheera, a Year Five pupil of SK Temiang, Seremban, was the overall winner in the Under-10 category in the Negri Sembilan Schools Sports Council (MSSNS) rhythmic gymnastics championships in 2003 and 2004.
She has also been consistent in her studies, maintaining her first position in her class for the past five years.
Besides rhythmic gymnastics, Nor Shaheera also excels in athletics. She won five gold medals in her school's annual athletic championships – in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay, 80m hurdles and long jump in the girls' Under-12 age group.
Nor Shaheera, whose involvement in rhythmic gymnastics started when she was eight, was selected to represent Negri Sembilan in the Sukma in Alor Star this year.
She trains five days a week at the Negri Sembilan Education Department Hall. Her coach is Norhashimah Abas.
Nor Shaheera said she loved gymnastics because of the movements accompanied by music.
“I have taken part in national competitions and such participation gives me the opportunity to learn new techniques. I also get the chance to watch gymnasts from other states,” said Nor Shaheera.
Her parents – Abdul Khalid Abu and Norazimah Yaacob – are also supportive of her involvement in rhythmic gymnastics.
“I am also attending ballet lessons to improve my skills,” said Nor Shaheera.
Coach Norhashimah said Nor Shaheera had the potential to be a competent rhythmic gymnast.
“She is a pretty girl, has good facial expression, is energetic and powerful in her routines. She also takes the trouble to practise on her own. Moreover, she has supportive parents – parental support plays an important part in a budding gymnast's career,” said Norhashimah.
Nor Shaheera has been selected to represent Negri Sembilan in the Milo-Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) championships in Kota Baru, Kelantan in August.
