IN a bid to help Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysias (HUKM) Tabung Kebajikan Pesakit Pediatrik (Onkologi), Kenny Roger's Roasters, HUKM, Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Resort and A Cut Above launched the second Roasters Chicken Run at Berjaya Times Square last Tuesday.
The run will be flagged-off by Deputy Youth and Sports minister Datuk Liow Tion Lai at 7am at Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Resort on July 23.
All proceeds will be given to the fund for the research and treatment of children with cancer.
Participants will have to run 3.5km while balancing an egg on a cone and the first to cross the finishing line without dropping the egg wins.
There are four categories -- boys Under-18, girls Under-18, mens Open and womens Open.
Berjaya Roasters (M) Sdn Bhd executive director Francis Lee said most Malaysians seemed to feel that exercise is boring and monotonous.
To change their perception, we have injected some fun factor while giving the opportunity to help young patients who are battling cancer.
Cancer treatments are very costly and that is why we have decided to join hands with HUKM to help ease the burden, said Lee, adding that about 1,500 participants took part last year, raising RM30,000 for HUKM.
HUKM director Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Razak said statistics shows that one in 200 of all cancers occur in children under the age of 15.
Today, there have been great advances in treatment. By the mid-90s, nearly 75% children with cancer survived at least five year after being diagnosed, he said.
A Roasters Family Carnival will also be organised at the run, giving family members who are not running the chance to participate.
At the carnival, there will be sand-art competition, egg painting contest, muffin on us contest, hulla hoop Challenge, Family Ice-Cream eating contest and fun games stall.
At the launch, there was a similar carnival with haircuts and games for participants. All proceeds from this event will also be given to HUKM Tabung Kebajikan Pesakit Pediatrik (Onkologi).
