Aid for schools' funds

THREE educational institutions received funds for their development projects from Popular Book Co Malaysia recently.

Southern College received RM50,000, while Foon Yew High School and SRJK (C) Foon Yew 5 received RM30,000 and RM20,000, respectively.

Popular executive director Lim Lee Ngoh said the money was raised through the sale of its food directory entitled The Popular Food Guide @ Johor.

The book was launched on Jan 20 in conjunction with the opening of Harris bookstore in AEON Tebrau City in Johor.

The bookstore is another brand name under Popular.

“The funds were raised with the help of various groups, from street hawkers to students and the public who have responded positively to the book and the cause,” said Lim during a cheque presentation ceremony at the Popular bookstore in Ikano Power Centre, Petaling Jaya.

The guest of honour at the event was Deputy Education Minister Datuk Hon Choon Kim.

Another event organised by Popular, Bookfest @ Malaysia, was also launched at the event.

The fest, which will be held from May 27 to June 4 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, is targeted to attract some 300,000 visitors. There will be more than a million book titles in English and Chinese.

Participating countries are China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.
