Victors again, thanks to holiday training

THE school holidays training programme has worked wonders for SMK Miharja as they became the overall champions in the secondary schools category in the Pudu Zone Schools Athletics championships for the fourth consecutive year.

In the four-day championships, held at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, SMK Miharja won 22 gold medals, 12 silver medals and eight bronze medals.

To make it a memorable outing, two athletes – V. Mogana and Nurheiza Junaidah – were adjudged as the best athletes in their respective age groups.

Mogana was the best athlete in the girls' Under-18 age group while Nurheiza was named as the best athlete in the girls' Under-15 category.

Mogana won gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 400m.

She also created a new meet record in the 200m.

Mogana's new time in the 200m erased the old record of 29.3.

She also equalled the 100m record of 13.6.

Nurheiza was in good form and erased three records.

Her records came in the 800m, 1500m and 3,000m.

In the 800m, Nurheiza won the gold medal in 2:47.0 erasing the previous mark of 2:48.0.

She continued her fine run in the 3,000m winning the gold medal in 12:00.8 bettering the previous record of 12:35.4.

Nurheiza clocked 5:37.25 erasing the old mark of 5:54.9 in the 1,500m.

SMK Miharja coach S. Arunandy said they were delighted being crowned as the overall champions for the fourth consecutive year.

“But credit should be given to the athletes who had continued training during the school holidays. Parents also played a big part in allowing their children to train. In fact, if not for parental support, it would not have been possible for us to train,'' said Arunandy.

He was also pleased with Nurheiza's progress in the middle distance events.

Nurheiza, a Form Three student, is also active in road races.

“She has the potential but needs guidance. If she can be focused then Malaysia has a middle distance runner in the making,'' he added.

In the primary schools category, SK Puteri Pandan 1 were crowned as the overall champions.

However, Arunandy said the overall results in the championships were not encouraging.

“Some of the athletes did not have the basics. So it will be difficult for them to make any headway in athletics. On the other hand, we should be happy as there are still students taking a keen interest in athletics,'' said Arunandy.
