MUAR, in Johor, is not only the home town of national badminton chief coach Yap Kim Hock. It is now famous for having the largest shuttlecock replica in Malaysia.
Badminton loving members of Fleet Sports Club have teamed up with Fleet AP Sdn Bhd to produce a shuttlecock 2.29m (7'6) high and 1.63m (5'4) wide.
This initiative has gone into the Malaysia Book of Records as the largest shuttlecock in the country.
The replica was produced in September, just in time for the lantern festival parade in Muar.
Club members of Fleet Sports Club came up with the idea to symbolise their passion for the game. They chipped in to help meet the cost for producing the shuttlecock, said Fleet AP general manager Lim Hui Hui.
Earlier, Fleet AP had sponsored two record-breaking badminton tournaments; including one that recorded the most number of participants.
A total of 526 players took part in the Malaysia Youth Council (MYC) President's Cup badminton championships in 2003. This year, the Belia Benci Dadah (Youth Hate Drugs) and Tan Sri Tee Hock Seng Cup badminton tournaments drew a total of 550 shuttlers.
Fleet AP is planning to display the gigantic shuttlecock replica at future tournaments sponsored by the badminton equipment brand.
