A FIREWORKS display lighted up the night sky as Penangites ushered in the country's 48th National Day at the stroke of midnight.
Young and old joined Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, his deputy Datuk Abdul Rashid Abdullah, state assemblymen, de-partment heads and DAP Wanita chief Chong Eng at the Esplanade in shouting “Merdeka” seven times when the Jalur Gemilang was hoisted.
