THE inaugural Tun Abdul Razak University (Unitar) Inter-Faculty Athletics Championships has helped former national junior middle distance runner K. Ganeshwaran to get his athletics career back on track.
The former student of SMK Seri Utama, Petaling Jaya, marked his return to the track in a winning fashion at the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MPPJ) Stadium in Kelana Jaya last Monday.
Ganeshwaran grabbed gold medals in the 800m, 1,500m and 5,000m, and helped the business administration faculty (FBA) quartet to win the 4x100m and the 4x400m.
The other members of the 4x100m and 4x400m FBA quartets were C. Pirabu, M. Thiruppathi and Mohd Taufik Abdullah.
Ganeshwaran, a first year business administration student, took a break from running after the 2004 Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Negri Sembilan to recover from hernia and lower back injuries.
“I am serious about making a comeback,” said Ganeshwaran, who won double gold medals in the 800m and 1,500m at the 2001 National Junior Athletics Championships in Malacca.
After graduating from the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) pre-university programme in 2003, Ganeswaran chose to pursue his education at Unitar, described as the nation’s pioneer “Virtual University”, because it offered a more flexible programme.
“Unitar is an affordable higher learning institution. In addition, we are given the option to catch up on our studies at our own pace via the Internet,” Ganeshwaran explained.
The one-day meet drew 200 participants from four faculties – FBA, information technology (FIT), humanities and social science (FHSS) and K-Force (collaboration programme with Defence Ministry).
Unitar student development centre head Mohd Azli Jailani said he was impressed with the way athletics development had been shaping up at Unitar.
“The primary objective of the Unitar Inter-Faculty Athletics Championships is to select team for the University Sports Council (Masum) Athletics Meet.
“Apart from that, the meet has created a platform for lecturers to mingle with students in a social setting.
“It was great to see lecturers showing a keen interest and supporting the event.
“Judging by the event’s success, we intend to have it as an annual affair,” Azli pointed out.
Unitar sports co-ordinator H. Jaibalan said the varsity took three months to prepare for the championships.
Jaibalan said the three Masum athletics circuits would start either in September or early October and end in May next year.
The Unitar Inter-Faculty Athletics Championships also allowed former Penang junior athletes Nor Azvin Muhd and L. Vigneshwaran to rekindle their moments of glory in track and field.
“It brought back old memories,” said Vigneshwaran, an information technology degree student who won a gold medal in the high jump and silver medals in the 110m hurdles and 5km walk.
“I was a high jumper and 110m hurler in school.”
Nor Azvin won gold medals in the high jump and 4x100m and silver medals in the 200m, 400m and 4x400m.
“I used to be playful and mischievous. So, my parents sent me to Unitar to focus on my tertiary education,” said Nor Azvin, 21, a third year business administration student.
The Unitar Inter-Faculty Athletics Championships saw FBA emerging as the overall champions with a 16-10-10 medal haul.
FBA dean Mohar Yusof said: “I am proud of the students' achievements. Prior to the championships, we were confident that we had the ability to clinch the top spot based on the keen response from the students.
“Despite having to sit for their June semester final exams recently, they were motivated and took the initiative to train on their own.”
