Rolling time for media, athletes

ATHLETES, volleyball and squash players, members of the media and Famemas put their skills to the test at the U-Bowl in One Utama Shopping Centre last Wednesday.  

National keglers Ben Heng and Daniel Lim also turned up to conduct a clinic for the 60 people who took part in the Samsung-Famemas All Stars Bowling Carnival.  

The seven volleyball players who turned up for the event were Hadi Putra Ismail, Shamsaimon Md Sharil, Lee Kok Peng, Mohd Akmaluddin Omar, Zarul Hisham and Yong Chong Hoo. Athletes Nazmizan Mohd, S. Ganesan, Moh Siew Wei, A. Munusamy, Anuar che Seman and Mohamad Afis and junior squash players Valentino Bong, Mohd Nafzahizam and Mohd Nafiizwan also showed up for the event. 

Mohd Nafiizwan, 19, and three other members of his team recorded the lowest score of 791 pinfalls for eight games.

However, they did not leave empty-handed as each member of the team received a durian.  

“I know the squash players. Today, I managed to make friends with the bowlers and volleyball players. It was fun even though I was bowling for the first time,'' said Mohd Nafiizwan. 

Berita Harian's Aby Abdullah scored 381 pinfalls for two games to win the men's individual title and the top prize - a Samsung mobile phone. 

Shaari Che Mat and Samuel Ong from The Star scored 369 and 364 pinfalls to finish second and third respectively. Shaari received a Samsung microwave while Samuel got a Samsung MP3 player

In the women's individual category, Berita Harian's Jamhariah Jaafar won with 413 pinfalls. Bernama's Azlina Aziz scored 327 pinfalls while Samsung Famemas Supporters Group's Maznah Abu Bakar scored 302 pinfalls to finish second and third respectively. 

Lorena Ng, Samuel Ong, Aszman Kaswawi and Zarul Hisham scored 1,310 pinfalls for eight games to emerge as the best team and win a Samsung DVD player each.  

Samsung Famemas Supporters Group pro-tem chairman Lee Hui Seng said: “Most of the athletes, who we cheer for, do not know who we are. This event will help us to get to know each other better. We also wanted to thank the media for the support they have been giving to us.” 

Recently, Samsung signed a five-year sponsorship with English Premier League champions Chelsea. The Samsung Famemas Supporters Group had also cheered the Malaysian contingent in the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, 2003 SEA Games in Vietnam and 2004 Olympics in Athens.
