PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested two individuals for stealing electricity to mine cryptocurrency at a warehouse in the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ).
South Klang OCPD Asst Comm Lim Jit Huey said the raid was carried out at about 9.30am on Friday (July 3) by officers from the South Klang district police headquarters' Criminal Investigation Division, with assistance from technicians from Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and Port Klang Free Zone auxiliary police.
He said a local man and a foreign national, aged 20 and 31, were arrested during the operation.
"All equipment used for the cryptocurrency mining was seized to facilitate investigations," he said in a statement on Saturday (July 4).
ACP Lim said the case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief and Section 37(1) of the Electricity Supply Act 1990.
He said Section 427 carries a penalty of up to five years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, while Section 37(1) of the Electricity Supply Act provides for a jail term of up to five years, a fine of up to RM100,000, or both upon conviction.
He added that police obtained a four-day remand order from the Klang Magistrate's Court, from July 4 to July 7, to facilitate further investigations.
