The Milo-Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Athletics Association (FTKLAA) Throws, Jumps and Under-distance Championships once again received overwhelming response from young athletes.
Almost 600 participants from all over the country took part in the one-day championships held at the National Sports Council Training Centre in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur.
FTKLAA secretary Datuk S. Vegiyathuman said the encouraging response was not a surprise.
“We had to reject about 100 participants due to logistic reasons. The encouraging response could be for various reasons.
“Firstly, it is the first athletics meet for the year. Secondly, the schools, particularly the sports schools in the country, are keen to gauge their athletes’ progress before the state and Milo-Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) athletics championships.
“The event was unique and included under distances — 60m, 150m, 300m, 600m and 1,200m — for both men and women. It was to give the athletes a chance to evaluate themselves in a shorter distance before moving to the competition season.
The National Juniors as well as students, from Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) and other state sports schools, presence also showed their enthusiasm.
“We had reasons to be happy with the response and it certainly showed that there is no lack of new talents in the country,’’ said Vegiyathuman.
The FTKLAA, considered the most active athletic association in the country, have been organising the championships annually.
They also have the support from the Kuala Lumpur Education Department.
The top three finishers of each event were presented with medals.
Several athletes made their presence felt in the championships. They include SSTMI’s Muhd Nadzreen Ezat Hafiz Che Osman (men’s 60m), Muhd Haiqal Hanafi (men’s 150m), M. Kesavan (men’s 600m), Ahmad Luth (men’s 1,200) and Nur Saidatun Nadia Zuki (women’s long jump).
Vegiyathuman said they were looking at making the championships a two-day affair.
“This year’s championships had several heats. The technical officials had to work without any break. It was quite tight. We have to go back and discuss the matter with the competition committee and decide,’’ he added.
The championships also gave the FTKLAA a chance to identify new talents. They are in the midst of their preparations for next year’s Malaysia Games in Kuching, Sarawak.
