Grooving the nights away


Bongga Bongga are back in action with a reunion gig tonight at Elli Rocks TTDI, as frontman Sherman Tan (right) is back in town.

WE are just days away from welcoming Chinese New Year and enjoying time off to explore the great music options in the Klang Valley.

Here’s a round-up of establishments in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya with live entertainment after dark.

MERDEKARYA

Merdekarya has been at the forefront of promoting the indie and grassroots scene. Tonight, there’ll be a special Valentine’s Eve gig, with those merchants of mayhem Panda Head Curry taking no prisoners from the stage. An entry fee of RM30 applies for tonight’s gig. Tomorrow, the Indie Logic open mic night is back with Big Mic Out. Among those slated to take the stage are Marco George, Shashank, Kingsley Chen, Zura, Arq, Emma and the Kronis and Al. Next Friday, Kien Lim is in the house to serve up some original rock numbers, while next Saturday, the focus is on funk rock with Otam taking the stage. Merdekarya welcomes post black metal act Mirthless on Feb 27 and folk musician Mei Thistle on Feb 28. No cover charge, except where noted, but a minimum tip of RM10 for the musicians is expected.

What started out as an intimate jazzy space has grown to encompass music to stand-up nights, even the occasional bit of theatre. However, music is still a big focus at this unpretentious hotspot. Tonight and tomorrow night, it’s a candlelight Valen­tine’s special with Celist, featuring Ee Jeng on keys, Jin Yen and Jing Yuan on violin and Pu Yen on cello.

Next Wednesday, comedy fans are in for a treat with the Ong Show comedy competition hosted by funnyman Rizal van Geyzel and featuring 10 comedians going head-to-head with the audience deciding who’s going to get more time.

Next Saturday, Kavin Jay and Nuha take the stage with “You Started It”. Beatles fans are in for a treat on Feb 24, with Poova and Raymond presenting “Day Tripper: A Ride With The Bea­tles”.

For blues fans, Feb 25 sees Vanessa Barker and Josh Thomas with the Straits Soul Connection. Rounding out the month on Feb 27 and 28, comedy queen Joanne Kam joins Papi Zak for “Love’s a Pitch”, also featuring Clinton Jerome. Cover charges apply, visit bobokl.com for details.

Veteran pianoman Michael Veerapen sets the direction for this jazz venue.

Tonight, it’s a Double Bill with Callista Lim and Jessica Teh swapping vocal duties as band leader Michael on piano joins Jeremy Quek on bass and Cliff Wong on drums.

Tomorrow night, Simply Jazz presents a Valentine’s Special with Samantha de Lune taking the stage.

The outlet then takes a break for CNY before returning on Feb 27 with David Soh on vocal duties and while Kirana Kay takes the stage on Feb 28.
