SHAH Alam City Council (MBSA)will begin towing abandoned cars from January next year, targeting vehicles left by workshops in parking bays.
Mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim said many of the abandoned vehicles were either left behind or parked by workshops in spaces meant for other businesses.
“Most of the time, the workshops will also park broken down cars in bays that are meant for neighbouring shops,” he said during a full board meeting at Wisma MBSA.
Mohd Fauzi said the abandoned vehicles were not only hogging parking space but tarnishing the city’s image.
“The Shah Alam City Council enforcement team will be towing away these abandoned cars in January.
“This is for vehicles that have been issued notices and are not removed after the given period.”
He added that leaving abandoned cars in public parking bays not only robs the council of revenue, but the towing charges, which is RM300 for vehicles with tyres and RM400 for those without, may ultimately fall on the taxpayer if the owners cannot be traced.
At the same meeting, Mohd Fauzi also announced that MBSA had acquired eight Proton e.MAS 7 electric vehicles to be used as official vehicles.
The departments which would be utilising the new vehicles were Engineering, Licensing, Community Development, Contracts and Quantity Survey, Management Services, Planning as well as the Mayor’s Office.
Mohd Fauzi said acquisition of the EVs was aimed at reducing maintenance costs by up to 30% per year in comparison to petrol or diesel vehicles.
Further to the city council’s green drive, Mohd Fauzi said single-use plastics would be banned in all MBSA-owned buildings and premises.
“This no-plastic ban will also be extended to events organised by MBSA,” he said.
