FOR the first time, the annual New Year countdown event organised by Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry will take place in Sibu, Sarawak.
This was announced by its Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing in a media statement.
With the theme “Sibu Carnival: Celebrating 2025 Together”, the event will take place from Dec 27 to 31 at Azman Hashim Community Sports Centre in SibuJaya.
The event is expected to draw a crowd of 10,000 and aims to blend cuisine, culture and entertainment to usher in the new year.
Tiong highlighted the event’s focus on showcasing Sarawak’s rich multicultural heritage.
“This is more than a New Year’s celebration.
“It is a platform to support local food vendors and promote our cultural heritage. I invite everyone to join us,” he said.
About 100 stalls will offer a variety of delicacies from Malay, Iban and Chinese communities, alongside contributions from other groups.
Stall allocation is 30% each for Malay, Iban and Chinese vendors, with 10% for other communities.
On Dec 31, there will be performances by Malaysian artistes and a spectacular fireworks display.
Tiong underscored the significance of such events in fostering cultural exchange and boosting the local economy.
“Sibu is a vibrant symbol of Malaysia’s cultural diversity, making it the perfect venue.
“The carnival will embody the spirit of unity that defines Sibu.”
He added that the carnival would also serve as a platform to promote Visit Malaysia 2026 and Asean 2025 initiatives, reinforcing Sarawak’s role in regional and international tourism efforts.
