CARDIOPULMONARY resuscitation (CPR) is a crucial life-saving technique that more people should pick up.

St John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) Foundation Federal Territories regional officer Kenneth Charles Fernandez, 33, said a person skilled in CPR would be able to properly revive a person who had gone into sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

“Most of the time, a bystander who steps up to give CPR will help increase the victim’s chances of survival while waiting for professional medical aid to arrive,” he said.

SJAM in Kuala Lumpur provides in-house training in CPR, holding classes of 10 participants or more.

Or you can opt to learn CPR in public classes for free in a two-hour session.

“Those with an understanding of CPR do make a difference as they are able to help if SCA takes place,” said Fernandez, who has been with SJAM for 18 years.

He said that having training in CPR would give people the confidence needed to step in to help someone in a medical crisis.

Rather than risk being in a critical situation where I cannot do anything to help, I chose to spend some time learning the proper practice of CPR. I believe it is knowledge that everyone should have.
