EDUCATION is a cause close to Datuk Robert Wong’s heart, which was why he did not hesitate to contribute to an education-related initiative under Star Media Group (SMG).

The Oriental Holdings Bhd group managing director presented a contribution of RM10,000 on behalf of Oriental Sports Club to sponsor The Star’s epaper next year.

“The sponsorship under The Star’s Newspaper-in-Education (Star-NiE) programme is to promote the learning of English among primary and secondary school students.

“Oriental Sports Club has been donating to SMG and Star Foundation for various initiatives since 2017,” said Wong during the sponsorship ceremony at Wisma Kah Motor, Kuala Lumpur.

He shared that he had donated more than RM1mil to SMG and its philanthropic arm Star Foundation over the years, including RM300,000 during his 82nd birthday celebrations last November.

In addition, the alumnus of St Xavier’s Institution also donated some RM130,000 to his former school in Penang and RM300,000 for Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Hospital, a not-for-profit teaching institution in Kampar, Perak.

SMG chief finance officer Sam Au received Wong’s latest contribution, on behalf of the media company.

Also present were Wong’s wife Datin Loh Ean and SMG corporate office special officer Loo Phan Kooi. – By JADE CHAN
