SELANGOR residents will be able to enjoy wider Internet coverage following the move by the state government to double the free WiFi Smart Selangor access points by Dec 31.

The initiative will increase the number of access points to 1,600 from the current 828, with focus on remote areas, to bridge the digital gap between urbanites and rural folk.

State infrastructure and public amenities, agriculture modernisation and agro-based industry committee chairman Izham Hashim said this initiative would give priority to five locations.

“Our focus is on low-cost housing estates, religious and health institutions, community centres, recreational and transport hubs, and state government buildings.

“However, the installation will also depend on the existing telecommunication infrastructure in a particular area.

“The WiFi service will offer users Internet speeds of up to 8Mbps,” he said in response to questions from Azmizam Zaman Huri (PH-Pelabuhan Klang).

Izham added that those who wished to apply could send an email to wifismartselangor@smartsel.my

He also gave the breakdown by district for existing access points and the ones that were planned for installation in the state.

For active access points, Sabak Bernam has six, Hulu Selangor (26), Kuala Selangor (47), Gombak (113), Hulu Langat (207), Petaling (276), Klang (84), Kuala Langat (21) and Sepang (48).

For planned access points, Sabak Bernam has 77, Hulu Selangor (88), Kuala Selangor (108), Gombak (79), Hulu Langat (81), Petaling (185), Klang (85), Kuala Langat (32) and Sepang (37).

WiFi Smart Selangor is an initiative by the state government to enhance Internet connectivity under its Iltizam Selangor Penyayang programme.
