Sibu voted one of cleanest towns in the country

SIBU is one of the 10 towns in the country to receive the Asean Tourist Standard Cleanest Town award for the period of 2022-2024.

The other nine recipients are Putrajaya, Kuching south, Kuantan, Miri, Kuala Terengganu, Kuching north, George Town, Muar and Langkawi.

However, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting advised residents not to be complacent but to continue to help keep the town clean at all times.

“Are we proud of this award? Yes, we are very proud of it but this is an ongoing process. In order for us to do better, we must continue to change our mindset to improve the standard of living,” he said.

Meanwhile, three public toilets in the town received five-star ratings as part of SMC’s ongoing efforts to promote civic mindedness.

Sarawak Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Michael Tiang commended SMC for initiating the public toilet rating system.

“This is a very good programme to encourage a certain level of hygiene and cleanliness in public toilets,” he said.

The award was presented by Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, while certificates were handed out by SMC committee chairman for public health and environment, Jenny Ting.
