THE opening of the Azman Hashim Community Centre is aimed at motivating the people of SibuJaya in Sibu, Sarawak, both young and old, to lead a healthier lifestyle.

The RM13.9mil centre, which covers an area of 3.1ha, was funded by Yayasan Azman Hashim.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Amcorp Group of Companies executive chairman Tan Sri Azman Hashim expressed hope that more sporting events would be organised in SibuJaya.

“In 2019, Yayasan Azman Hashim pledged to donate a full-fledged community sports centre with multiple indoor and outdoor facilities worth RM13.9mil, and we have delivered.

“We hope this centre will encourage more activities within the township.

“We expect that along the way, new talent will be discovered and developed within SibuJaya.

“Perhaps with the opening of the community centre, future generations will be able to excel at international sporting events,” he added.

Azman said he was delighted to learn that SMK SibuJaya’s weightlifting team had bagged 15 gold and 10 silver medals at Sukan Sarawak 2019.

The first users of the centre were 360 athletes who competed at the sixth Special Olympics Sarawak State Games from July 2 to 3.

Amcorp Group of Companies started developing SibuJaya in 1995.

To date, more than 6,000 homes have been built and occupied.

Additionally, there are about 300 shophouses in the township.

The businesses housed there not only benefit SibuJaya residents, but also those from rural areas such as Kapit, Kanowit, Selangau and Durin.

“Throughout the years, there has always been support from the Sarawak government with the development of amenities such as a police station, healthcare centre, fire station, public library, mosque and two schools.

“Besides that, many new roads and highways are being built for the benefit of SibuJaya, which has a population of 30,000 and is still growing,” said Azman.
