THE Penang government has decided to extend the hotel room fee waiver until June 30 next year.

State tourism and creative economy committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said the decision to extend the exemption for six months was in support of the tourism industry.

“This extension follows the announcement of the original waiver period which was from July 1 until Dec 31 this year.

“The state government understands the difficulties faced by many tourism industry players due to the Covid-19 pandemic, ” he said in a statement.

Yeoh said this fee waiver extension was one of the state’s initiatives to support the recovery of the tourism industry.

“The recovery and redevelopment process of the industry will take time in the face of the new norm, ” he added.

The hotel room fee was imposed at RM3 per room per night for four and five-star hotels and RM2 per room per night for facilities of three stars and below including hostels, budget motels and dormitories.
