KUANTAN: Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) has started a food pantry in line with the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry’s effort to expand the Foodbank Malaysia programme to public universities.
Students can now obtain food, drinks and other necessities at the UMP campus pantry.
The programme will be introduced soon at UMP Pekan as well.
Deputy vice-chancellor (student affairs and alumni) Prof Datuk Dr Yuserrie Zainuddin said they appreciated contributions from outside parties and individuals who provided food, including raw ingredients to make the initiative a success.
He said part of the supply would be cooked at the UMP mosque for students while the rest would be distributed especially to those who were staying off campus.
“For a more systematic distribution of food, UMP has created a registration system for food items received and also to record students who have already received the items.“At the same time, a special UMP Campus Pantry portal is being developed to make it easier for students to get further information and also for donors to make monetary or food contributions,” said Prof Yuserrie.
Kelab Penyayang UMP president Mohammad Aiman Mohd Amran hoped the programme could help ease students’ expenditure, besides cultivating an attitude of giving among UMP folk and the public.
He also advised students to only take what they need so others could enjoy the benefits too.
The UMP Campus Pantry operates from 9am to 12pm and 2.30pm to 4.30pm from Monday to Friday.
The public could contribute food items to the student affairs and alumni department counter or donate money through the MyGiftUMP portal by selecting UMP Campus Pantry or visit http://campuspantry.ump.edu.my for further information.
