SIBU: Dudong SUPP had resorted to going public with their call for secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting to step down because previous issues raised by them were ignored by the party’s central committee.
At a press conference yesterday, the division’s assistant secretary Dr Wong Chya Wei said the branch had all along brought up issues.
“Unfortunately, the matters raised by us were never properly addressed.
“This has been happening for quite sometime. That is why we took the step of issuing a press statement,” said Dr Wong, referring to Dudong SUPP office-bearers call for Ting to resign.
He claimed in the past couple of years, Ting had not gone to Sibu for official functions.
Dr Wong also rebutted the statement made by president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian that they had done so for personal benefit.
“We are not seeking personal gain. We do not know what Dr Sim meant when he said that.”
Dr Sim had on Monday reminded SUPP members that party matters should be discussed internally instead of through the media.
He said he was disappointed that certain members had decided to raise internal issues in the press despite having the opportunity to speak at party meetings.
Dr Wong said their aim in issuing the press statement was out of concern for the oldest party in the state, which is celebrating its 59th anniversary this year.
SUPP had a dismal showing in GE14 and lost six out of seven parliamentary seats it contested.
“Our purpose was to ensure that the party progresses. We have the interest of the party at heart,” he said.
Dr Wong hoped the party’s central committee would give them direction so that the grassroots would know how to develop the party further.
He said branch chairman Wong Ching Yong and vice-chairman Kelvin Kong were not present at the press conference as they were travelling.
