Melaka top SPM scorers set new goals

MELAKA: SMK Infant Jesus Convent (IJC) has emerged as the state’s top achiever in the 2017 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examinations.

Its principal Chong Chew Yoong said a total of 36 students scored straight As as compared to 24 students in 2016.

“Five of our candidates achieved straight A+, which is the highest recorded in Melaka. One of them even scored 11A+,” she told reporters when met at the school in Banda Hilir here.

She said the school aimed to produce at least 45 straight As students in the 2018 SPM examinations.

Tee Ker Yin, 18, who scored 11A+, is pursuing A-Levels in Pure Science at Taylor’s College in Selangor.

Tee said she hoped to pursue her degree in the United Kingdom but had yet to decide on the field.

“I pay attention in class and spend two to three hours every day on revision,” she said.

Wan Wei Wei, who achieved 10A+, hoped to study biomedical science in Australia.

The fan of the Crime Scene Investigation series said she wanted to become a researcher or a forensic science expert.

“I hope to research on new drugs for contagious diseases as it can benefit the people,” said Wan, who is pursuing the Monash University Foundation Year at Sunway College in Selangor.

Another 10A+ achiever Andrea Goh Hui Qin said she wanted to study engineering just like her sister and brother who are her inspirations.

Melaka also recorded another achievement when rural school SM Ghafar Baba, a cluster school at Masjid Tanah here, achieved 100% pass rate.

Five students achieved 10As and 9As, qualifying the school as the state’s top six in SPM.

“I hope the school maintains its position in the 2018 SPM or increase the number of those scoring straights As,” said Lendu assemblyman Datuk Sulaiman Md Ali.

Sulaiman handed RM1,000 over to the schools’ Parents and Teachers Association chairman Badaruddin Selamat as a gesture of encouragement.
