SET high up on the 34th floor of Pacific Regency Hotel Suites is a well-known restaurant, famous for wedding proposals and romantic dinners.
The 10-year-old Italian restaurant called Cristallo di Luna, entices diners with its view of the twinkling lights in the city.
Setting the mood for a romantic night, the restaurant has soft dim lights, reflecting on gold tablecloths and runners, making it a perfect place to wine and dine with a view.
Also making dining in this restaurant worthwhile are more than 20 types of dishes – from appetisers and soups to mains and desserts – all carefully selected and crafted by acting executive chef Zairul Effendi Mohd Nor and team.
Sitting in clear view of the city’s lights, we began our review with an appetiser, the Kaffir scented Lobster Soup with Sea Scallop and Coconut Foam, one of the restaurant’s popular soups. It was thick and mustard-coloured, served in a soup plate with a seared scallop set in the middle.
It was a delightful start to the night as the soup was bursting with flavours. The portion was big enough for two, and I could not finish it.
For mains, we had a choice of Pan-Seared Sirloin of Black Angus Beef, Truffle Potato, Baby Carrots, Fine Beans and Signature Sarawak Black Pepper or Grilled Marinated Free Range Chicken Supreme, with Roasted Mediterranean Vegetables in Tomato Case, Confit Garlic Puree, Basic Scented Oil and Jus.
I chose the sirloin while Darren Tan, our photographer, had the chicken.
Another big portion worth your money if you are coming for dinner with an empty stomach. The taste of black pepper was not strong, which I quite liked and the meat was just perfect – juicy and not chewy. I would definitely recommend trying this tasty meal.
However, the sides of baby carrots and beans were a little bland and needed a little more seasoning. I tried a piece of Chicken Supreme from Tan. I could see why he finished his meal fast and it was a popular dish here.
The chicken, with slightly crispy skin, was well marinated. A generous amount of chicken jus was given to ensure that the chicken wasn’t dry when eaten.
For dessert, we were served Chocolate Spice Torte with Lemon Sorbet and Light Hazelnut Custard.
People have different ways to show they love their food; they either eat it slowly or as fast as they can. With this dish, I took my time to eat it as I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Not only was it chocolatey, the pairing with lemon sorbet and macadamia nuts enhanced the taste of the dessert, giving it a warm yet refreshing feel to the palate.
A dash of chilli flakes was mixed in with dark chocolate mousse for this dessert. I only tasted the spice in the last bite.
For those who are dining at Cristallo di Luna for the first time, Zairul recommends that you start your meal with Warm Seared Scallops and Prawn with Ruby Red Grapefruit, Orange and Frisee Salad, Piquillo Coulis.
For mains, a must-try is the Grilled Tenderloin of Black Angus Beef, Pommes Au Dauphinoise, Fricasse of Wild Mushroom, Glazed Baby Onions, Morel Jus and Truffle Oil.
End your meal just as I did with a little sugar and spice.
