His appointment effective yesterday was announced during the first meeting of the fifth term of the 13th Kedah state assembly.
Dr Ananthan, 50, who is also the MIC Kulim-Bandar Baharu division chief, replaces Datuk Shahanim Mohd Yusof whose term as senate member ended on May 20.
