SIBU: A total of 16 Indonesians who tried to enter the state illegally through the “Lorong Tikus” (smugglers’ tunnel) near the Sarawak-Indonesian border in Tebedu have been detained.
A statement by First Infantry Division noted that the group, which included four women, were caught during Ops Awas at 6am on Saturday.
The operation led by Deputy Lieutenant Ikram Ishak started at the Lorong Tikus near Kampung Entubuh, Tebedu, when they arrested the illegal immigrants aged between 21 and 62.
The team also seized 17 sacks of clothes and used handbags believed to be smuggled items, from them. None of them had legitimate travel documents.
All 16 were then brought to the police station here before being transported to the Immigration Depot at Simuja in Gedong.
Meanwhile, 31st Infantry celebrated its second anniversary on Saturday with a parade involving 23 officials and 201 of other ranks.
The event also saw commander of 31st Infantry, Brigadier General Datuk Fadzil Tajudin presenting Certificates of Achievement to four personnel who managed to slim down.
Speaking at the event, he urged all its personnel to work together in strengthening the unit formed two years ago.
“I also want all personnel to be more committed to their work besides upholding personal discipline and respect for the force, to strengthen the force in its task of looking after the country’s security,” he said.
