KOTA KINABALU: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) have conducted a series of successful operations and arrests throughout 2016 and up to June this year because of the commitment of security forces and cooperation from the public.
Outgoing Esscom commander Datuk Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said they managed to foil some 1,057 smuggling attempts for items involving taxes worth RM14.09mil since 2016.
“We also managed to arrest a total of 5,704 undocumented people and inspected over 90,000 people in 833 integrated operations and 10 Ops Gasak against illegal immigrants during this period,” he said.
He said Esscom also identified 23 people wanted for various criminal offences, out of which six were shot dead, two arrested and three surrendered.
“These are the results of our dedicated Esscom and security personnel as well as the strong cooperation from the public and local communities,” Wan Bari said.
“I am truly thankful and happy for all the good work and collaborative effort extended to me as a commander since coming here in December 2015,” he said.
He said the strong support and information sharing from the marine police as well as the Philippine National Police and the Indonesian and Philippine military also played a role in the success.
“It is only with these collaborations that we are able to get the wanted cross border criminals and thwart attempts by these groups to further threaten our security,” Wan Bari said.
He hoped the effective teamwork formed with those involved directly or indirectly with Esscom would be strengthened for the benefit of the nation’s security.
