THE Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) will fix speakers on all its garbage trucks to disseminate information to the public on the waste separation at source policy in Penang.
MPSP Urban Services Depart-ment director Mohd Puad Hamid said that so far, 25 compactor trucks had been installed with the speakers.
“We want to educate the public on the policy as the trucks make their rounds.
“If it works, we intend to have the speakers installed on all 74 compactor trucks and 62 recycling trucks in Seberang Prai,” he told reporters yesterday.
Earlier, he accompanied state Local Government Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow to inspect the recycling room at Ocean View Residences in Jalan Harbour Place.
Chow said the management corporations (MC) and joint-management bodies in stratified residential areas have three tasks under the Segregation at Source Bylaw and Licensing of Recyclers Bylaw 2016.
“They must inform the residents of the policy, prepare space for them to dispose the recyclable waste and finally, appoint agents to collect it on schedule,” he said.
Ocean View Residences MC chairman Alvin Yeow said there are 392 units in the 29-storey condominium and about 90% of the residents have already been practising waste separation.
He said: “On average monthly, we collect about 100kg of paper, 70kg of plastic, 25kg of alumi-nium and 20kg of food waste.
“We thank the residents for supporting the policy, and we hope those who have yet to start will do it soon. Otherwise, we will track and issue them a warning.”
Later, Chow and MPSP officials also visited The Signature condominium in Jalan Baru.
