Prefab tech the way to go: DBKL

Some 71% of the six-storey parking complex at Taman Segar, Cheras was built using IBS technology.

THE 12 multi-storey parking complexes being built by Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) for its housing schemes will use industrialised building system (IBS) or prefab construction technology for better quality assurance and quicker build time.

During the launch of city hall's commercial multi-storey parking complex at Taman Segar, Cheras, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor stressed that the use of the technology could enhance the quality of buildings.

“IBS technology increases construction productivity as well as reduces the period of construction and reliance on foreign labour.

“Residents and business owners here have asked for additional parking lots, and we are heeding their request by providing them with this six-storey parking complex.

“We will be using similar designs for the other multi-storey parking complexes in Kuala Lumpur,” Tengku Adnan said in his opening speech.

IBS technology standardises a building’s construction process as the components are pre-manufactured in a controlled environment before being transported to the construction site for assembly.

Some 71% of the RM34.89mil Taman Segar parking complex was built using the IBS System.

Constructed by Tetuan Impass Daum Sdn Bhd, work in the building began on April 15 2014 and was completed on March 17 this year.

The building also has a 1,831sqm multipurpose hall on the top level which caters to community events.

In addition, there are three badminton courts in the hall and a total of 28 food-and-beverage stalls on the ground floor.

“This area is congested, but the complex will reduce the traffic on the road.

“Some of the hawkers have also relocated here from the outside stalls,” Tengku Adnan added.

Parking rate is fixed at RM1 for the first hour and RM1 for each subsequent hour, but capped at a maximum of RM6 per day.

Also present at the launch were Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz, Federal Territories Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Adnan Md Ikhsan, DBKL project management executive director Datuk A. Thomas Richards, Cheras UMNO division chief Datuk Seri Syed Ali Alhabshee.
