SETIA SPICE Convention Centre in Relau, Penang, is the first hybrid solar powered venue in the world.
Touted as the largest and most comprehensive multi-purpose indoor venue in the northern region, the convention centre can accommodate up to 40,000 people at one time.
It also is Green Building Index- certified.
Setia SPICE Convention Centre senior manager Yeoh Kheng Ho said its 4,459sq m pillar-less ballroom could fit up to 400 round banquet tables.
“There is also a 1,858sq m grand foyer just outside the convention centre that can fit an additional 150 round tables.
“The venue is also equipped with retractable partition system that allows it to be divided into four smaller halls where various events can be held at the same time,” he said.
He said that atop the centre, there was a 2.42ha (six-acre) roof garden which has the largest special needs children’s playground and largest urban spice garden in Malaysia.
“The convention centre also has a roof fitted with 1,600 custom-made triangle glass panels.
“These panels are fixed indivi- dually and will be illuminated by 654 energy-efficient light bulbs,” he said.
Setia SPICE Convention Centre is a collaboration between the Penang government and SP Setia Bhd.
The centre is among the five elements of the entire RM700mil project that includes SPICE Arena, SPICE Canopy, SPICE Aquatic Centre and a business class hotel on a plot measuring 10.1ha.
Earlier at the Setia Welcome Centre, SP Setia general manager Ng Han Seong handed a RM20,000 mock cheque to Star Media Group regional operations general manager (north) Simone Liong in sponsorship of the grand prizes for the Spin & Win contest in the upcoming the Star Education Fair.
Ng believes that education is the key to many opportunities.
“This sponsorship is in line with Setia’s ‘Live Learn Work Play’ development philosophy,” he said.
A total of 20 grand prizes will be given out at the two-day fair.
