More drug arrests last year

A TOTAL of 13,458 drug offenders were arrested in Perak last year, said State Narcotics Criminal Investigations Department chief Asst Comm R. Ravi Chandran.

He said a total of 2,220 individuals were arrested for various offences of drug traffickings, an increase of 12.2% compared to 1,979 in 2015.

He said the bulk of the offenders (539) were arrested under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carried the mandatory death sentence.

“A total of 139 were arrested under the Special Preventive Measure Act 1985.

“Majority of the arrested are the masterminds, planners or financiers of a group of syndicates,” he told a press conference last week.

ACP Ravi said besides that, the department had busted six illegal drug laboratories last year, and arrest 18 people.

He said the department during the raids had also seized firearms such as pistols, bullets, hand grenades, and mortar bombs.

“A total of 4,622 suspects were arrested for drug possession, an increase of 13.2% compared to 4,083 people arrested in 2015.

“The department managed to seize various types of drugs worth RM8.8mil in total during the raids.

“Among the drugs seized, syabu and ganja top the list,” he added.

ACP Ravi added that with the Forfeiture of Property Act 1988, the department seized various forms of properties including houses, land, jewellery, vehicles and bank accounts worth RM8.4mil.

He said the department would continue to enhance its action against the drug menace in the state this year.

“We want to curb drug related activities, especially cases involving drug trafficking and drug possession.

“The department would also like to thank the public who continue to provide information, and we hope to get their continuous support,” he added.
