THE RM21.4mil Relau City Sports Complex in Penang, which boasts Olympic-class swimming and diving pools, is expected to open to the public in mid-February.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said work on the two-storey building was completed within the 20-month stipulated time.
He said the sports complex would be the first in Penang that fulfilled the Green Building Index features.
“There will be a soft opening in February to allow the public to use the facilities.
“The date for the official opening will be decided later,” he said after a site visit recently.
Construction of the pools at the complex began in April 2015.
Besides the pools with a minimum depth of 2.2m and measuring 25m by 50m, the complex also has 10 badminton courts, a gymnasium, dry gym, a shop selling sports merchandise and a cafe.
There are 96 parking spots, as well as disabled-friendly facilities like parking spots and toilets.
It also has 35 bicycle parking bays in a move to encourage people to cycle to the complex.
Lim said the state could now host international sporting events at the complex.
“It will further cement the state’s status as the centre for meetings, incentive convention and exhibition,” he said.
