SIBU: Recipients of welfare assistance in Sarawak are eligible for more cash as the late Tan Sri Adenan Satem had approved a larger allocation for the purpose during his time as the Chief Minister.
Welfare, Women and Community Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said Adenan was very concerned with the welfare of the needy.
For the Chinese New Year goodies, she said the 7,371 recipients statewide were currently receiving RM100 as ang pow, compared with a hamper worth RM50.
“Sarawak is the only state in the country where the victims of natural disaster such as flood, fire and landslide will be provided with financial assistance,” she said after presenting CNY goodies here.
“For daily pocket money, the amount has been increased from RM40 to RM100 per person daily while money for clothing is now at RM200 from RM70 per person previously.
“Food allowance is now at RM50 (RM30 previously) a day for each person. Financial assistance for building material is now at RM5,000 from RM2,500 while financial assistance for kitchen facility for each family is raised from RM100 to RM700,” she added.
Adenan, she pointed out, had also agreed to her request to have nine more paliative care personnel such as physiotherapist.
“There are many things agreed by the state government under Adenan’s administration which were not given out by other states. We are very grateful and indebted to him,” she said.
Monthly welfare assistance, she said, also covered some 57,000 needy individuals from all races and religions.
Fatimah gave away goodies to 190 recipients from Sibu after attending a similar function in Sarikei in the morning.
She also presented incentive to Paralympics athletes in Kuching and Sibu for winning eight gold medals in individual events and a gold and a silver in the team events at the national meet in Penang recently.
