Plainclothes policemen raiding a ‘handphone shop’ in Miri.

MIRI: At a glance, their premises looks like a coffee or a mobilephone shop. But it is just a set up to cover up their illegal digital online gambling operation from the public and the authorities.

Miri police raided several of these “shops” in a residential area near here over the weekend and arrested two illegal gambling operators.

Three women have been arrested during a raid in Taman Tunku.

Miri police chief Asst Comm Khoo Leng Huat has confirmed the arrests.

“We are investigating these outlets for operating illegal inhouse gambling dens.

“We have seized cash and equipments used in these gamblings,” he said.

A 26-year-old woman was caught in a coffeeshop for possessing items for online gambling transactions. Two other women aged 23 and 26, were arrested at a “mobilephone shop” with online gambling items hidden behind the counters.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated case, a couple led police to their house to arrest their drug-addict son, after lodging a police report on his drug addiction and violent behaviour.
